We recently caught up with pony rider Emma O’Connor, (literally, this is a busy little lady!). Emma is constantly competing on her ponies and, by the looks of things, in the winter spends her spare time hunting. Meet Emma……
Emma seems to be currently on form in a winning streak, with a number of recent wins. We think Emma likes winning:)
Rider: Emma O’Connor
Current ponies: Are you nearly there yet (128cms), Pepper Diamond (128cms), Jaydee (128cms), Carrie Grey (138cms)
Favourite pony: Are you nearly there yet (128cms). “She is my favourite pony as I have had her since she was 3 years old and she is a 6 year old pony now and this year so far she has won the 128 90cm in Ballylawn Show, 128 90cms and 128 1m at Killeagh District Gymkhana, 128 1m at Barnadown Show, 128 90cms and 128 1m at Aglish Charity Show, 128 90cms at Dungarvan Show – seven wins to date and numerous placings.”
Best advice: “Ride her like you stole her!”
The biggest mistake you have learnt from: “Going the wrong course three times in one day, I haven’t made that mistake again!”
Biggest achievement: “Winning four open classes at our local gymkhana – Aglish Charity Gymkhana – with Are you nearly there yet (128 90cms & 128 1m) and Carrie Grey (138 1m and 1.10m).”
Ambition: “To qualify for the RDS.”
Favourite horse riders: “Tholm Keane (my trainer), and Fra Connors.”
Other sports: “I play half forward for St Oliver’s Ladies Football Club.”
Funniest moment: “When my daddy David fell off in a drain out hunting it was really funny.”
We wish Emma the best of luck for the future. It’s nice to see she gets her inspiration from her favourite riders – they like winning too!!
